Social Concerns
Catholic Campaign for Human Development
The Social Concerns Office directs the work of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development in the diocese. This is a unique and successful anti-poverty program of the U. S. Catholic bishops. Based on the principles of empowerment and self-help, it provides financial and technical assistance to low-income community groups seeking institutional change in the social, political and economic arenas.
In over a thirty-year period, CCHD dollars have funded more than 200 self-help organizations that fight poverty in the diocese. Funds are raised through an annual collection and through donations from individuals and parishes. Facilitated by the SCO, a local diocesan advisory committee determines annual funding recommendations.
